Zakat is not just charity – it is an obligation, a right, and one of the five pillars upon which Islam stands. It is a beautiful system ordained by Allah to purify our wealth, cleanse our souls, and create a just and compassionate society where no one is left behind.

What is Zakat?

Zakat (literally meaning "purification" and "growth") is the mandatory annual charity that every eligible Muslim must pay on their wealth. It is not a voluntary donation or a generous gift – it is a right that the poor and needy have over the wealth of the rich.

Allah says in the Quran: "Take from their wealth so that you may purify and sanctify them." (Surah At-Tawbah: 103)

Why Is Zakat Important?

  1. A Pillar of Islam: Zakat is the third pillar of our faith, following Shahadah and Salah. Fulfilling it is essential to complete our Islam.

  2. Purification of Wealth: Just as Salah purifies our soul, Zakat purifies our wealth. It removes any impurity and blesses what remains.

  3. Purification of the Self: Giving Zakat trains us to overcome greed, develop generosity, and detach from worldly possessions.

  4. Social Justice: Zakat is Allah's divine system for wealth distribution. It ensures that wealth does not merely circulate among the rich but reaches those who need it most.

  5. Blessings and Growth: Contrary to reducing wealth, Zakat actually increases it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Charity does not decrease wealth." (Muslim)

Who Must Pay Zakat?

Zakat is obligatory upon every adult, sane Muslim who:

  • Possesses wealth above a specific threshold (Nisab)

  • Has owned this wealth for one full lunar year (Hawl)

  • Is free from debt that would reduce their wealth below Nisab

What Is Nisab?

Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth that makes Zakat obligatory. It is equivalent to:

  • 87.48 grams of gold (approximately 3 ounces)

  • 612.36 grams of silver (approximately 21 ounces)

Most scholars recommend using the silver Nisab as it is lower, allowing more people to be included in giving Zakat and more recipients to benefit.

What Wealth Is Subject to Zakat?

  • Gold and silver (including jewelry, coins, bars)

  • Cash (in hand, bank accounts, savings)

  • Business inventory and merchandise

  • Stocks and investments

  • Agricultural produce

  • Livestock (camels, cattle, sheep, goats)

  • Rental income and pensions

  • Retirement funds (401k, IRA, etc. – on the portion you control)

What Is Excluded?

  • Personal residence and household furniture

  • Personal vehicles

  • Business equipment and machinery

  • Debts owed to you (until received)

  • Basic necessities of life

How Much Zakat Must Be Paid?

The rate of Zakat is 2.5% (1/40) of your total qualifying wealth that has been in your possession for one lunar year.

Example: If you have $10,000 in savings for one year, your Zakat would be $250.

Who Receives Zakat?

Allah has clearly specified the eight categories of Zakat recipients in the Quran:

"Zakat expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [Zakat] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveler – an obligation [imposed] by Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise." (Surah At-Tawbah: 60)

The Eight Categories:

Category Description
The Poor (Fuqara) Those who have little to nothing, cannot meet basic needs
The Needy (Masakin) Those who have some income but still insufficient
Zakat Collectors (Amiloon) Those appointed to collect and distribute Zakat
Those Whose Hearts Are to Be Reconciled (Mu'allafatu Quloobuhum) New Muslims or those inclined towards Islam
Freeing Captives/Slaves (Fi Riqab) Helping people free themselves from bondage or unlawful detention
Those in Debt (Gharimoon) Those burdened by debt for legitimate needs
In the Cause of Allah (Fi Sabilillah) For the defense of Islam and Muslims; also includes beneficial projects
The Stranded Traveler (Ibnus Sabil) Travelers who have run out of resources
